【Nihon Shinwa-katarihono of Gion Matsuri brief overview】
Nihon Shinwa-katarihono (日本神話語り奉納) of Gion Matsuri Festival (祇園祭) is held every year on July 10th. In Nihon Shinwa-katarihono, a passage from “Kojiki (Records of Ancient Matters)” Japan’s oldest historical and literary book, and others are read aloud and dedicated to the deity of Yasaka Shrine in Buden. In Nihon Shinwa-katarihono, a part of the story about Susano-no-mikoto, the main deity of Yasaka Shrine and the origin of the Gion Matsuri Festival, is read aloud.
★It is said that “Kojiki (Records of Ancient Matters)” was compiled by Ono Yasumaro by order of the 43rd Emperor Genmei from the Teiki and the Kyuji, which Hieda no Are recited by the order of the 40th Emperor Tenmu, and presented to the 43rd Emperor Genmei in 712. “Kojiki” consists of a preface and the Kamitsumaki (first volume), the Nakatsumaki (middle volume), and the Shimotsumaki (lower volume), the Kamitsumaki (first volume) is the period of the age of the gods, such as the beginning of heaven and earth, the Nakatsumaki (middle volume) is the period from the 1st Emperor Jimmu (660 B.C.-585 B.C.) to the 15th Emperor Ojin (270-310), and Shimotsumaki (lower volume) is the period from the 16th Emperor Nintoku (313-399) to the 33rd Emperor Suiko (592-628). “Kojiki” records various events, myths, legends, songs, etc. of the era. Incidentally, “Kojiki” is said to have had the purpose of organizing and unifying the Teiki and the Kyuji, strengthening the authority of the emperor, and demonstrating the legitimacy of the emperor’s rule. “Kojiki” is said to be the “Kiki” along with the oldest official history in Japan, “Nihonshoki, completed in 720. However, it seems that the original of “Kojiki” does not exist, only the manuscript remains.
★Susano-no-mikoto is the son of Izanagi-no-mikoto (father) and Izanami-no-mikoto (mother), and the younger brother of Amaterasu-omikami, who is considered the ancestor of the Imperial Family. It is said that Susano-no-mikoto slayed the eight-headed, eight-tailed Yamata-no-rochi in Izumo and married Kushiinadahime-no-mikoto, whom he saved, and became the ancestral deity of Izumo. Incidentally, in Shinko-sai and Kanko-sai, Nakagoza Mikoshi, which carries the divine spirit of Susano-no-mikoto and Higashigoza Mikoshi, which carries the divine spirit of Kushiinadahime-no-mikoto are paraded.
★Buden (Important Cultural Property) was built in 1903. Buden is decorated with lanterns dedicated by Ryo-tei (restaurant) and Hanamachi oki-ya. Dedication ceremonies are held at Buden. Maiko from Gion Kobe, Gion Higashi, Miyagawa-cho, and Pontocho dedicate their dances and throw beans on Setsubun every year. Mikagura is performed on the eve of Rei-sai (Rei-taisai) on June 15th, traditional performing arts are performed on Kangetsu-sai on Chusyu, and Bugaku is performed on Bugaku Hono on November 3rd.
