★Goshuin (red seal, 御朱印) is the stamp (seal) of the temple, shrine, etc., and the ink inscriptions of the name of the temple, shrine, the main statue, the main deity, the date of worship, etc., which are given to worshippers and visitors to the temple or shrine. Goshuin (red seal) varies according to the temple and shrine, and in some cases only a stamp (seal) is given, or a copy of a stamp (seal) and a copy of the ink inscriptions are given. Even within the same temple or shrine, there may be different Goshuin (red seal) or special Goshuin (red seal) depending on the location, event, and time of year. The origin of Goshuin (red seal) is not clear, as there are different theories. However, it is believed that “Goshuin” is also called “Nokyoin,” and it seems likely that its origin is the reception stamp used when copies of sutras were delivered to a temple.
