Kitakannon Yama, Minamikannon Yama and Ofune Hoko are pulled on Shinmachi-dori, and Taka Yama is pulled on Sanjo-dori. In Latter Festival Yamahoko-hikizome, you can not only see Yamahoko floats, but the public can also experience pulling them. (Confirmation is required.)

★Kitakannon Yama is derived from the fact that the statues of Yoryu Kanon and Idaten are enshrined there. According to an old document owned by the town, Kitakannon Yama was founded in 1353. Around the time of the Onin War (1467-1477), Kitakannon Yama began to parade alternately with the neighboring town of Minamikannon Yama. In addition, Kitakannon Yama was once also known as “Nobori Kannon Yama”.
★Minamikannon Yama is derived from the fact that the statue of Yoryu Kanon and Zenzai Doji are enshrined there. In the “Gionshaki (Records of Yasaka Shrine)”, which describes the names of Yamahoko floats and places before the Onin War (1467-1477), it is written as “Fudaraku Yama”, and Minamikannon Yama is said to have already been founded before the Onin War. In addition, Minamikannon Yama was once also known as “Kudari Kannon Yama”.
★Ofune Hoko is derived from the story of the “Sankan Seibatsu” of the pregnant Empress Jingu. Since Fune Hoko originated from the return of the ship from on an expedition to Shiragi, it is said to be “Gaisen no Funehoko (Triumph)”, while Fune Hoko is said to be “Shutsujin no Funehoko (Departure)”. According to the “Gionshaki (Records of Yasaka Shrine)”, Ofune Hoko was founded in 1441. According to the “Yasutomiki”, Ofune Hoko was founded in 1422.
★Taka Yama was founded before the Onin War (1467-1477), and was paraded just before Ofune Hoko. Before the Onin War, Taka Yama was written as Takatsukahi Yama (between Sanjo Muromachi and Nishitoin), and it is said that Taka Yama put out two towns, Koromodana-cho (town) and Kamaza-cho (town).
In 1826, Taka Yama was damaged by an evening shower, and in 1864, it was burned down in Genji-no-Taika (the Great Genji Fire), leaving behind the goshintai (deity figure) and some of the kesohin, but it returned to Latter Festival Yamahoko-Junko (Float Procession, Yamaboko Parade) in 2022.
★Shinmachi-dori runs north-south from Kamigamo Bridge at the northern end to Jujo-dori South at the southern end. Shinmachi-dori used to be Machijiri-koji and Machiguchi-koji in Heian-kyo. It is said that after the Kamakura period (1185-1333), Shinmachi-dori became Machi-koji, which ran through the center of town and was lined with mud storehouses and other buildings.
★Sanjo-dori runs east-west from Shinomiya, Yamashina-ku, at the eastern end, to the Togetsu-kyo Bridge in Arashiyama, at the western end. Sanjo-dori used to be Sanjo-oji in Heian-kyo. The Sanjo Bridge on Sanjo-dori was the last stop of the 53rd terminus of the Tokaido.
