【Koshiki Ichiriduka Matsukazari-shiki of Gion Matsuri brief overview】

Koshiki Ichiriduka Matsukazari-shiki (古式一里塚松飾式, Nakano-cho Goku, 中之町御供) of Gion Matsuri Festival (祇園祭) is held every year on July 14th. Koshiki Ichiriduka Matsukazari-shiki is held at the town hall of Matsubara Nakano-cho Gion-doko, where Tongu Gion Shrine (Yasaka Shrine) is enshrined in the backyard, inviting priests of Yasaka Shrine, and Chigo and Kamuro of Naginata Hoko. In Koshiki Ichiriduka Matsukazari-shiki, a person selected from Matsubara Nakano-cho serves as a priest and performs the Shinto ritual, offering items such as bream with head and tail, shrimp, and other sacred offerings. By the way, Former Festival Yamahoko-Junko (Float Procession, Yamaboko Parade) was different from the current route, and until 1955, it went south from Shijo Teramachi to Teramachi-dori and went west on Matsubara-dori, and Chigo of Naginata Hoko took a break at Gion-doko and visited to Tongu Gion Shrine (Yasaka Shrine). At that time, Matsubara Nakano-cho entertained Chigo of Naginata Hoko with sweets made from nuts and usu-cha (light tea) made with water. However, in 1956, the route of Former Festival Yamahoko-Junko (Float Procession, Yamaboko Parade) was changed to the current one, and the hospitality ceased, but after that, Chigo of Naginata Hoko and others began to visit. Furthermore, since Koshiki Ichiriduka Matsukazari-shiki is not an official event of Gion Matsuri Festival, Chigo of Naginata Hoko is not carried on the shoulders of a male gouriki, but walks on the ground to the town hall of Matsubara Nakano-cho Gion-doko.

★It is said that when an epidemic broke out in Matsubara Nakano-cho in the Edo period (1603-1868), Susano-no-mikoto (Gozutenno) was invoked in the town and Tongu Gion Shrine was built, and after praying, the epidemic was cured. Later, it is said that during Former Festival Yamahoko-Junko (Float Procession, Yamaboko Parade), they expressed their gratitude for the divine virtues of Susano-no-mikoto (Gozutenno), offered sacred sake and food, and expressed their joy. Matsubara Nakano-cho was once a yori-machi supporting Nagatohoko-cho (Naginata Hoko).
★Chigo of Naginata Hoko is currently the only Iki-Chigo (living child). In the past, Iki-Chigo was boarded Hoko floats other than Fune Hoko and Ofune Hoko, but when Kanko Hoko, which was damaged by the Great Fire of Tenmei in 1788, was revived in 1839, the child doll began to be used instead of Iki-Chigo, and other Hoko floats gradually replaced the child doll, and since 1929, when Hoka Hoko was replaced by the child doll, only Naginata Hoko has been used for Iki-Chigo boarding.
★It is said that Naginata Hoko was founded in 1441 or before 1441. It is also said that Naginata Hoko was founded by using a great long sword donated to Yasaka Shrine in 1225. Naginata Hoko is said to be the oldest Yamahoko float of Gion Festival in existence today. In the “Gionshaki”, which describes the names of Yamahoko floats and places in the middle of the Muromachi period (1336-1573) before the Onin War (1467-1477), it is written as “Naginata Hoku (between Shijo Totoin and Karasuma)”. The name “Naginata Hoko” comes from the fact that there is a great long sword attached to the tip of Yamahoko float, which exorcises plague and evil. The great long sword used to be a great long sword made by Sanjo Kokaji Munechika, a great long sword made by Sanjo Nagakichi in 1522, and a great long sword made by Izumi-no-kami Raikinmichi in 1675, but now a replica of bamboo with tin foil is used.
