【Miyabikai Osendo of Gion Matsuri brief overview】

Miyabikai Osendo (みやび会お千度) of Gion Matsuri Festival (祇園祭) is held every year between July 4th and 9th. In Miyabikai Osendo, Inoue Yachiyo, the head of the Kyomai-Inoue school, and maiko and geiko (geisha) from Gion Kobu (Hanamachi district) wear matching new yukata (summer kimono, light cotton kimono) with navy blue patterns on a white background and walk around Honden (Main Shrine) 3 times clockwise to pray for the improvement in their skills and the safety of Gion Matsuri Festival. The pattern of the yukata changes each year. After Miyabikai Osendo, they are purified at Honden (Main Shrine) and a commemorative photo is taken in front of Minami Ro-mon Gate (South Gate).

★Miyabikai Osendo, like Naginatahoko-cho Osendo, which is held every year on July 1st, walk only three laps around Honden (Main Shrine), instead of 1,000 laps. If a large number of people walk three laps around Honden (Main Shrine), it is considered to be about 1,000 laps. Miyabikai is an organization of students from the Kyomai-Inoue school, including maiko and geiko (geisha) from Gion Kobu (Hanamachi district). Incidentally, Gion Koubu serves as Hanagasa-Junko of Gion Matsuri Festival every other year.
★The Inoue school is one of the schools of Japanese dance, also known as Kyomai, because it developed in Kyoto. The Kyomai-Inoue school is said to have originated when Sato (the 1st generation, Inoue Yachiyo), the sister of Inoue Keisuke, a Confucian scholar, learned Furyu-mai from the Konoe family. After that, the 1st generation, Inoue Yachiyo, served as a dance instructor for the Konoe family during the Kansei period (1789-1801). The Inoue school (Kamigata-mai) has been designated as an intangible cultural property (entertaining art) of Kyoto Prefecture, and the 4th and 5th generations, Inoue Yachiyo, are both Living National Treasures.
★Gion Koubu, along with Gion Higashi, is said to have originated from the mizujaya (teahouse) that operated at front of the gate of Yasaka Shrine in the early Edo period (1603-1868) and the chatate-onna (girls) who worked there. Itakura Shigemune, Kyoto shoshidai (the chief magistrate of Kyoto), gave permission for chatate-onna (girls) to be employed at Mizujyaya, and the chaya-machi in front of Yasaka Shrine became known as “Gion-machi. In 1872, Gion Koubu Kabukai was founded by Sugiura Jiroemon, the 9th generation of the Ichirikitei, Hase Nobuatsu, the 1st governor of Kyoto Prefecture, and others. In the same year, Yasaka Nyokoba was founded, and in 1951 it became a school corporation, operating the Gion Joshi Gigei School, which trains maiko and geiko. In 1881, Gion Higashi separated from Gion Koubu and became independent. The dance of Gion Koubu is the Kyomai-Inoue school, which holds the Gion Odori dance in the spring and the Onshukai dance in the fall. Gion Koubu is said to be the largest of the five Hanamachi districts (Gion Higashi, Miyagawacho, Pontocho, Kamishichiken).
