【Naginatahoko Chigo Shasan of Gion Matsuri brief overview】
Naginatahoko Chigo Shasan (長刀鉾稚児社参) of Gion Matsuri Festival (祇園祭) is held every year on July 13th. In Naginatahoko Chigo Shasan, Chigo dressed in tate-eboshi (hat) and suikan (clothe) visits Yasaka Shrine on white horses, accompanied by two Kamuro and others. Chigo is given the rank of Shogoi-Major General, the same rank as Daimyo (feudal lord) of 100,000 goku, so that Chigo does not become disrespectful when looking down on the person of high status or position from the top of Naginata Hoko during the former festival Yamahoko-Junko (Float Procession, Yamaboko Parade) on July 17th. For this reason, Naginatahoko Chigo Shasan is also called “Okurai Morai-no-gi (Rank Receiving Ceremony)”. After Naginatahoko Chigo Shasan, Chigo is considered a messenger of the god and is carried on the shoulder of a male goryiki, instead of walking on the ground in public. Then, Chigo and two Kamuro stop at Nikenchaya Nakamuraro, located on the grounds of Yasaka Shrine, and are offered Chigo-mochi. It is said that if you eat Chigo-mochi, you won’t lose weight during the summer, and that it will protect you from the plague. After Naginatahoko Chigo Shasan, Chigo enters into a life of devotion and sanctification, and according to “Nyonin Kinsei (custom of forbidding women)” policy, he does not eat any meals prepared by women, but eats meals prepared on a separate fire from other people. In addition, women are not allowed to board Naginata Hoko.
★In the past, Hoko floats other than Naginata Hoko float took turns doing Chigo Shasan, but now only the Naginataboko float, which the only Iki-Chigo board, does it. In the past, Iki-Chigo was boarded Hoko floats other than Fune Hoko and Ofune Hoko, but when Kanko Hoko, which was damaged by the great fire of Tenmei in 1788, was revived in 1839, the child doll began to be used instead of Iki-Chigo, and other Hoko floats gradually replaced the child doll, and since 1929, when Hoka Hoko was replaced by the child doll, only Naginata Hoko has been used for Iki-Chigo boarding.
★Chigo-mochi will be available to purchase by the general public from July 14th to July 31st.
It is said that Nikenchaya Nakamuraro was founded around 1550. There are two chaya (teahouses) on the east and west sides of the approach in front of Minami-Romon Gate, with Kashiwaya on the east side said to be the origin. Incidentally, Sanjo Wakasaya sells Gion Chigo-mochi, which originated from Chigo-mochi.
★The origin of Naginata Hoko is not clear. It is said that Naginata Hoko was founded in 1441 or before 1441. It is also said that Naginata Hoko was founded by using a great long sword donated to Yasaka Shrine in 1225. Naginata Hoko is said to be the oldest Yamahoko float of Gion Matsuri Festival in existence today. In the “Gionshaki”, which describes the names of Yamahoko floats and places in the middle of the Muromachi period (1336-1573) before the Onin War (1467-1477), it is written as “Naginata Hoku (between Shijo Totoin and Karasuma)”.
