In general, the best time to see the plum blossoms is earlier when the spring temperature is high, and later when the spring temperature is low. In Kyoto, the best time to see the plum blossoms is from early February to late March. The Japan Meteorological Agency predicts the time of plum blossoms using white plum tree as the standard tree. When the standard tree has 5 to 6 flowers, it is in bloom.

In northern Kyoto City, the best time to see the plum blossoms is usually from mid-February. At Kamigamo Shrine, red, white, and weeping plum trees are planted. At Kyoto Botanical Garden, about 150 plum trees of 60 species are planted in the ume grove, including YoKihi, Tamagaki-shidare, and Tamabotan. Incidentally, the Kyoto Botanical Garden enshrines Nakaragi Shrine, a branch of Kamigamo Shrine.

【Plum Blossoms Spots in Eastern Kyoto City (洛東)】
In eastern Kyoto City, the best time to see the plum blossoms is usually from early February. At Shimogamo Shrine, there is a successor to the plum tree that was the model for Korin Ogata’s “Kohakubai-zu Byobu (Red and White Plum Blossoms Screen, National Treasure). At Chishaku-in Temple, red and white plum trees are planted along the approach and in the ajisai-en (hydrangea garden) behind Kondo. At Hoju-ji Temple, red, white, weeping, and oshukubai plum trees are planted in the precincts.

In central Kyoto City, the best time to see the plum blossoms is usually from early February. At Kyoto Gyoen, about 250 plum trees of about 20 species are planted, including Kurokino-ume, white, and red plum trees. Admission to Kyoto Gyoen is free. At Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, about 1,500 plum trees of 50 species are planted in the Bai-en (Plum Garden)) and other areas, including Tsuki-no-katsura, Beniwakonbai and black trees. Nijo Castle has a plum grove in the southwestern part of the castle, where about 130 plum trees are planted.

At Zuishin-in Temple, about 200 light red Hanezu-no-ume plum trees are planted in the Ono-baien (plum garden) and other areas. At Kaju-ji Temple, Garyu-no-robai (old plum tree) transplanted from the Kyoto Imperial Palace are planted.
