【Shinyou-sui Kiyoharai-shiki of Gion Matsuri brief overview】

Shinyou-sui Kiyoharai-shiki (神用水清祓式) of Gion Matsuri Festival (祇園祭) is held every year on July 10th and July 28th. Shinyou-sui Kiyoharai-shiki is a ritual for pumping shinyou-sui (divine water) used for Mikoshi-arai to purify mikoshi (portable shrine). In Shinyou-sui Kiyoharai-shiki, the priests of Yasaka Shrine and Miyamoto-gumi go from Chugen-ji Temple on the west side of Yasaka Shrine to the Shijo-Ohashi Bridge. At Shijo Ohashi Bridge, shinyou-sui (divine water) is pumped with an oke (bucket) from the Kamo-gawa River (Miya-gawa River) on the south side of Shijo Ohashi Bridge, where two imidake (bamboo) have been erected, and a total of six oke (buckets) of shinyou-sui (divine water) are prepared. After shinyou-sui (divine water) has been pumped, a ritual is held at the saijo (ceremony site) on the east bank of the Kamo-gawa River (south side of the Shijo Ohashi Bridge), and shinyou-sui (divine water) is purified. After the ritual, three of the six oke (buckets) of shinyou-sui (divine water) are kept at the saidan (altar) until Mikoshi-arai, and the other three oke (buckets) are taken to Chugen-ji Temple.

★Mikoshi-arai is a ritual for purifying the mikoshi (portable shrine). Mikoshi-arai purifies Nakagoza Mikoshi, one of the three mikoshi (Nakagoza Mikoshi, Higashigoza Mikoshi, and Nishigoza Mikoshi), is purified. Nakagoza Mikoshi carries the divine spirit of Susano-no-mikoto, the main deity of Yasaka Shrine.
★Chugen-ji Temple is said to have originated in 1022, when the Buddhist sculptor Jocho placed a statue of Jizo Bosatsu in the northeast area of Shijo Bridge. Later, in 1228, the Kamo-gawa River flooded, and when Nakahara Tamekane, who was appointed Boukashi, prayed to Jizo Bosatsu to stop the rain, and the rain stopped, it became a chokuganji temple of the 86th Emperor Go-Horikawa, and the temple name was given as “Chugen-ji”, and Jizo Bosatsu became known as “Amedome Jizo”. In 1585, Chugen-ji was moved to its present location by order of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The name “Amedome Jizo” was later changed to “Meyami Jizo”, which is said to be beneficial for healing eye diseases.
★The Kamo-gawa River is a first-class river in the Yodo-gawa River system, which flows through Kyoto City from north to south. The Kamo-gawa River originates from Mt. Sajikigadake, which is about 896 meters above sea level in Kita-ku, Kyoto City, and has a length of about 35 kilometers, flowing south after joining the Takano-gawa River and joining the Katsura-gawa River at Shimotoba. Since ancient times, the upper reaches of the Kamo-gawa River have been considered a sacred place where the misogi (purification) took place. During the Heian period (794-1185), the nanase-barai (purification ceremony) was held monthly by the Onmyoji, and the hitogata on which the emperor breathed and stroked his body was sometimes floated down the Kamo-gawa River. Incidentally, the section of the Kamo-gawa River from Shijo Ohashi Bridge to Matsubara Bridge, where Mikoshi-arai is held, is called Miya-gawa River, named after Yasaka Shrine, and is also the origin of the name Miyagawa-choi (Hanamachi (Kagai) district).
★Shijo Ohashi Bridge is a bridge built over the Kamo-gawa River, which flows through Kyoto City from north to south. According to the “Shake Kiroku (Record)” of Yasaka Shrine, Shijo Ohashi Bridge is said to have its origins in 1142. Shijo Ohashi Bridge was built as a lattice girder bridge from 1874 to 1911 and as a reinforced concrete arch bridge from 1913 to 1941. The present Shijo Ohashi Bridge was built in 1942 as a steel continuous girder bridge with a length of about 65 meters and a width of about 25 meters.
