【Suzuka Yama History and Brief Overview】

The origin of Suzuka Yama (鈴鹿山) is not clear. In the “Gionshaki”, which describes the names of Yamahoko floats and places in the middle of the Muromachi period (1336-1573) before the Onin War (1467-1477), it is written as “Susuka Yama すすか山 (between Sanjo Karasuma and Anekoji)”, and Suzuka Yama is said to have already been founded before the Onin War.

★Suzuka Yama is derived from the legend of Suzuka Gongen (Seoritsuhime-no-mikoto) who defeated the demons that plagued people on Mt. Suzuka in Ise during the Enki period (901-922) in the middle Heian period (794-1185). Seoritsuhime-no-mikoto appears in the Oharae-no-kotoba and is the goddess of eliminating disasters and is considered to be one of the haraedo-no-Shishin (four gods of exorcism) along with Hayaakitsuhime, Ibukidonushi and Hayasasurahime. In addition, the name of Seoritsuhime-no-mikoto is derived from purifying the impurities of the swift waters of the river, and is said to be the god of rivers and waterfalls, and is enshrined in shrines near rivers and waterfalls. Seoritsuhime-no-mikoto is sometimes regarded as the wild and brave spirit of Amaterasu Omikami. The Oharae-no-kotoba has been used in rituals since the Nara period (710-794), and is also called “Nakatomi-no-haraekotoba”, “Nakatomi saimon”, or “Nakatomi-no-harae”. It is said that the Nakatomi clan (Fujiwara clan) chanted at Suzakumon Gate during the Nara period.
