【Food stalls of Gion Matsuri brief overview】
Food stalls (Yatai Roten, 屋台露店) of Gion Matsuri (祇園祭) are lined up every year on July 15th and July 16th during Former Festival Yoiyama period from July 14th to July 16th. By the way, it is also said that the 14th is Yoiyoiyoiyama, the 15th is Yoiyoiyama, and the 16th is Yoiyama, and food stalls are lined up on Yoiyoiyama on the 15th and Yoiyama on the 16th. Food stalls do not line the entire area where 23 Yamahoko floats are assembled, but rather a portion of Karasuma-dori (Sanjo-dori to Takoyakushi-dori area), Muromachi-dori (Yamabushi Yama to Hakurakuten Yama area) and Shinmachi-dori (Hoka Hoko to Iwato Yama area), which stretch from north to south. (Subject to change) Incidentally, Muromachi-dori and Shinmachi-dori are lined with large Yamahoko floats. Kikusui Hoko and Niwatori Hoko stand on Muromachi-dori, and Hoka Hoko, Fune Hoko and Iwato Yama stand on Shinmachi-dori.
On the 15th and 16th, when food stalls are set up, traffic restrictions are enforced in the evening and the area around the Shijo-Karasuma and Shijo-Muromachi junctions becomes a pedestrian paradise, and a large crowd is expected. Although they are not food stalls, some restaurants around Yamahoko floats will sell food and drinks in the same way as food stalls. Be sure to follow good manners and avoid littering at food stalls. During the period when food stalls are lined up, Gion Festival Zero Garbage Campaign will be held.
★Food stalls sell hiyashi-ame, which is a drink that represents the summer in Kyoto. Hiyashi-ame is an amber-colored drink made by dissolving malt starch syrup in hot water and adding squeezed ginger juice, and is popular in the Kansai region. Food stalls also sell standard kakigoori (shaved ice), ringo-ame (apple candy), mikan-ame (mandarin orange candy), and chilled vegetables (eggplant, tomatoes). In addition, Instagram-worthy goldfish cider and light bulb soda may also be sold. (Food stalls are different from regular stores, and may not be open or may have been changed.)
★On Muromachi-dori, food stalls are located north and south of Shijo-dori. Muromachi-dori runs north-south from Kitayama-dori at the northern end to Jujo-dori South at the southern end. On Muromachi-dori, Yamabushi Yama, Kikusui Hoko, Niwatori Hoko, and Hakurakuten Yama are located from the north.
★On Shinmachi-dori, food stalls are located north and south of Shijo-dori. Shinmachi-dori runs north-south from Kamigamo-bashi Bridge at the northern end to Jujo-dori South at the southern end. On Shinmachi-dori, Hohka Hoko, Fune Hoko and Iwato Yama are located from the north.
★On Karasuma-dori, food stalls are located north of Shijo-dori. Karasuma-dori runs north-south from Imamiya-dori at the northern end to Jujo-dori South at the southern end. On Karasuma-dori, Moso Yama is located. Karasuma-dori used to be Karasuma-koji in Heian-kyo. In Heian-kyo, Suzaku-oji was the main street, and today Karasuma-dori is also called “Ima Suzaku” because it runs north-south on the west side of the Kyoto Imperial Palace. In 1994, Karasuma-dori was selected as one of the 100 most beautiful street trees in Japan.
