Katata Kugoningyoretsu Funahokenhoukoku-sai (堅田供御人行列鮒奉献奉告祭) is the zen-gi (preliminary event) of Aoi Matsuri Festival (葵祭) Roto-no-gi (Period Procession), which is held every year on May 15th, and is held every year on May 14th. (In case of bad weather, Roto-no-gi is postponed to the next day, the 16th.) In Katata Kugoningyoretsu Funahokenhoukoku-sai, the Kugonin procession, including parishioners from Kanda Shrine and Izu Shrine in the Katata area of Shiga Prefecture, departs from Kanda Shrine and parades through Izu Shrine and the Katata area. Then, the Kugonin procession moves from the Katata area to Shimogamo Shrine. At Shimogamo Shrine, the Kugonin procession parades from Tadasu-no-Mori Forest of Shimogamo Shrine to Honden (main shrine), and offer crucian carp, funa-zushi (funa sushi, crucian carp sushi) etc. carried in a karabitsu to the deities of Shimogamo Shrine. At Honden (main shrine), a Shinto ritual is performed and a receipt is received. In addition, it is said that after Katata Kugoningyoretsu Funahokenhoukoku-sai, a commemorative photo is taken at Romon Gate.

★Katata Kugoningyoretsu Funahokenhoukoku-sai is an event that originated in the late Heian period (794-1185) when the Katata area of Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture offered crucian carp from Lake Biwa to Shimogamo Shrine and received the privilege of being exempt from various duties and taxes. Katata Kugoningyoretsu Funahokenhoukoku-sai was temporarily suspended after the Pacific War, but it was revived in 1992. It is said that in 1090, the Katata area became Mikuriya where Shimogamo Shrine collects offerings for the deities of Shimogamo Shrine.
★Kanda Shrine was founded in 811 during the early Heian period (794-1185) and enshrines the deity Hikokunifuki-no-mikoto. Kanda Shrine is located at 4-7-2 Mano, Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture. Izu Shrine was founded in 892 during the early Heian period (794-1192) and enshrines the deity Oyamadumi-no-mikoto. Izu Shrine is located at 119-26 Honkatata, Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture.
★Crucian Carp is a species of fish in the genus Crucian Carp of the subfamily Carpidae. Crucian carp include Nigo-buna, Hera-buna, Gengoro-buna, Gin-buna, and Europe-buna, and are found in rivers and lakes on the Eurasian continent and in Japan. Nigo-buna is endemic to Lake Biwa and is used to make funa-zushi (funa sushi, crucian carp sushi). Funa-zushi is a local dish of Shiga Prefecture. Funa-zushi is a nare-zushi (mature sushi) made only with crucian carp, salt and rice, and has a unique fermented smell. In addition, it is said that female crucian carp with their fish eggs are more delicious than male crucian carp.
