【Imidake-tate of Gion Matsuri brief overview】

Imidake-tate (斎竹建て) of Gion Matsuri Festival (祇園祭) is held every year on July 15th. Imidake-tate has been done since ancient times by the service of Takahashi-cho (twon) in Higashinotoin Takatsuji. In Imidake-tate, two green bamboo (imidake) with leaves are erected, one on the north and one on the south side of Shijo Fuyacho on the west side of Yasaka Shrine Otabisho. Two green bamboo (imidake) are tied in place with the rough straw rope. Usually, the rough straw rope is wrapped 12 times, and 13 times in leap years. Then, mori-shio (salt) is placed near two green bamboo (imidake). First, two square pillars are erected one on the north side and one on the south side. Next, sakaki similar to those attached to the shingi (pillar) of Hoko float, are attached to two green bamboo (imidake), and many white shide (papers) are decorated with them. The green bamboo (imidake) is then attached to the pillar with metal fittings and secured with ropes. It takes about two hours to erect two green bamboo (imidake). In addition, shimenawa (sacred rope) is strung with the two imidake erected on the north and south sides just before shimenawa-kiri of Former Festival Yamahoko-Junko (Float Procession, Yamaboko Parade), and after Chigo of Naginata Hoko performs Chigo-mai (Taihei-no-mai) and Chigo cuts shimenawa (sacred rope) with tachi (long sword). When shimenawa (sacred rope) is cut, the barrier to the sacred area is opened, and 23 Yamahoko floats begin their parade. However, shimenawa-kiri is only performed at Former Festival Yamahoko-Junko (Float Procession, Yamaboko Parade) on July 17th, and not at Latter Festival Yamahoko-Junko (Float Procession, Yamaboko Parade) on July 24th. In addition, in Takahashi-cho Shasan on July 10th, it is said that they pray for the safety of the ritual (Gion Matsuri Festival) and receive shimenawa (sacred rope) strung with imidake.

★Imidake (斎竹) is also called Imidake (忌竹) and is generally erected during Shinto rituals to prevent impurity.
★Takahashi-cho (town) is located in Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture. Takahashi-cho (town) is located south of Shijo-dori and stretches from east to west of Higashinotoin-dori.
★Yasaka Shrine Otabisho was founded at its present location in 1591 during the Momoyama period (1591-1600), when Toyotomi Hideyoshi consolidated Omandokoro Otabisho and Shoshoi Otabisho. Yasaka Shrine Otabisho is where three mikoshi are temporarily enshrined from Shinko-sai (Oide) held on July 17th to Kanko-sai (Okaeri) held on July 24th.
★Shijo-dori is Shijo-oji of Heian-kyo from Shin Kyogoku-dori on the east side to near the Tenjin River on the west side. Shijo-dori is the main road leading to Yasaka Shrine.
★Shimenawa-kiri is performed by Naginata Hoko which lead Former Festival Yamahoko-Junko (Float Procession, Yamaboko Parade). Shimenawa-kiri, which is based on old documents, began in 1956. Imidake is set up early in the morning of July 15th, and shimenawa is strung just before shimenawa-kiri.
★Imidake was once erected by Raigo-in (来迎院), a sub-temple of Sennyuji Temple (泉涌寺), at Shijo Higashinotoin, where Akuoji Shrine, a branch shrine of Yasaka Shrine was located, and Naginata Hoko cut Shimenawa (sacred rope) that was stretched on Imidake. It is said that at Shijo Higashinotoin near Akuoji Shrine, Imidake was erected on all sides.
