【Mugon-mode of Gion Matsuri brief overview】

Mugon-mode (無言詣) of Gion Matsuri Festival (祇園祭) is held every year from July 17th to July 24th. Mugon-mode is held for 8 days from Shinko-sai (Oide) on July 17th to Kanko-sai (Okaeri) on July 24th, when Nakagoza Mikoshi, Higashigoza Mikoshi, and Nishigoza Mikoshi are temporarily enshrined at Yasaka Shrine Otabisho (Shijo Otabisho, Gion Otabisho). It is said that if you visits from the Shijo Ohashi Bridge to Yasaka Shrine Otabisho every night in silence without speaking to anyone, your wish will come true. By the way, on the last day, the 24th, you will make seven round trips in one night from Shijo Ohashi Bridge to Yasaka Shrine Otabisho, ending on the eighth trip at Yasaka Shrine Otabisho. (There are several theories)

★Mugon-mode is said to have originated when maiko and geiko (geisha) from the Hanamachi (Kagai) district visited Yasaka Shrine Otabisho to pray for the fulfillment of their love after performing on the ozashiki. Mugon-mode (Shichido-mairi) is said to have been described by Nobel Prize-winning author Kawabata Yasunari in his long novel “Koto (the Ancient Capital)”.
★Hanamachi (Kagai) district is Gion-Koubu, Gion-Higashi, Ponto-cho, Miyagawa-cho and Kamishichiken, and five Hanamachi (Kagai) district are called “Go-Kagai (Five Hanamachi)”.
Gion Koubu and Gion Higashi are said to have originated from the mizujaya (teahouse) that operated at front of the gate of Yasaka Shrine in the early Edo period (1603-1868) and the chatate-onna (girls) who worked there. In addition, Gion Higashi separated from Gion Koubu and became independent in 1881. Ponto-cho is said to have originated in the early Edo period (1603-1867) when the Kamo-gawa River was reclaimed and cha-ya (teahouses) and hatago (inns) were built there. The place name of Ponto-cho is said to be derived from the Portuguese words “ponto (ahead)”, “ponte (bridge)”, and “ponto (point)”. It is said that Miyagawa-cho began around the time of Izumo no Okuni’s Kabuki Odori (Kabuki Dance), which became popular in the Edo period (1603-1868). Izumo no Okuni founded Kabuki Odori based on the Yayako Odori (Yayako Dance) and built a temporary hut on the Shijo riverbank to provide entertainment.
★Yasaka Shrine Otabisho was founded at its present location in 1591 during the Momoyama period (1591-1600), when Toyotomi Hideyoshi consolidated Omandokoro Otabisho and Shoshoi Otabisho. Yasaka Shrine Otabisho took on its current appearance in 1912 when Shijo-dori was widened. Yasaka Shrine Otabisho is also called “Otabisho”, “Shijo Otabisho”, “Gion Otabisho” and so on.
★Shijo Ohashi Bridge is a bridge built over the Kamo-gawa River, which flows through Kyoto City from north to south. According to the “Shake Kiroku (Record)” of Yasaka Shrine, Shijo Ohashi Bridge is said to have its origins in 1142. The present Shijo Ohashi Bridge was built in 1942 as a steel continuous girder bridge with a length of about 65 meters and a width of about 25 meters.
