Yamahoko Map (Former Festival) of Gion Matsuri Festival

Yamahoko Map (Former Festival) uses Google Maps to show the location of the floats. Yamahoko (Yamaboko) floats are located in the area bounded by Higashinotoin-dori (east-west), Aburanokoji-dori (east-west), Takoyakushi-dori (north-south), and Matsubara-dori (north-south). Assembly of the floats begins on July 10th and is completed two to three days later, with Former Festival (Saki Matsuri) Yamahoko-Junko (Float Procession) taking place on July 17th. Dismantling of the floats begins immediately after the Yamahoko Junko is completed. Yamahoko (Yamaboko) can only be seen for about a week.

【Nagina Hoko (Nagina Boko,長刀鉾) on Shijo-dori】

  • location: Nagina Hoko is located on Shijo-dori, about 90 meters east of the intersection of Karasuma-dori (north-south) and Shijo-dori (east-west). Nagina Hoko is located closest to Yasaka Shrine among the floats.
  • Nagina Hoko is marked by a pillar extending into the sky and a great long sword at the tip. The great long sword exorcises plague and evil. Nagina Hoko is about 21.76 meters high, 6.42 meters long, 4.35 meters wide, weighs about 11.1 tons. Nagina Hoko (Nagina Boko,長刀鉾)

【Kikusui Hoko (Kikusui Boko,菊水鉾) on Muromachi-dori】

  • location: Kikusui Hoko is located on Muromachi-dori, about 60 meters north of the intersection of Muromachi-dori (north-south) and Shijo-dori (east-west).
  • Kikusui Hoko is marked by a pillar extending into the sky and a 16-petaled chrysanthemum flower at the tip. Kikusui Hoko is about 25.00 meters high, 6.95 meters long, 3.95 meters wide, 10.31 tons in weight. (2008 Data) The name Kikusui Hoko comes from a well in the residence of the tea master Takeno Johou. Kikusui Hoko offers tea ceremonies during Former Festival Yoiyama.

  • location: Hohka Hoko is located on Shinmachi-dori, about 40 meters north of the intersection of Shinmachi-dori (north-south) and Shijo-dori (east-west). Hohka Hoko is the only Hoko float built on Shinmachi-dori among the Hoko floats.
  • Hohka Hoko is marked by a pillar extending into the sky, with the sun, moon, and stars at the tip. Hohka Hoko is about 24.60 meters high, 6.34 meters long, 3.80 meters wide, 10.32 tons in weight. (2008 Data) Hohka Hoko enshrines a priest in the middle of the pillar. Hohka Hoko is always the 21th in the Former Festival Yamahoko-Junko (Float Procession).

【Fune Hoko (Fune Boko,船鉾) on Shinmachi-dori】

  • location: Fune Hoko is located on Shinmachi-dori, about 60 meters north of the intersection of Shinmachi-dori (north-south) and Bukkoji-dori (east-west).
  • Fune Hoko is shaped like a ship. Fune Hoko and Ohfune Hoko are the only floats shaped like ship. Fune Hoko is about 6.60 meters high, 6.85 meters long, 3.30 meters wide, 8.41 tons in weight. (2008 Data) Fune Hoko has an imaginary golden bird at the bow and a beautiful rudder at the stern. Fune Hoko is always the 23th in the Former Festival Yamahoko-Junko (Float Procession).

  • location: Iwato Yama is located on Shinmachi-dori, about 90 meters south of the intersection of Shinmachi-dori (north-south) and Bukkoji-dori (east-west).
  • Iwato Yama is marked by a pine tree stretching into the sky. Iwato Yama is about 14.045 meters high, 6.35 meters long, 3.90 meters wide, 8.25 tons gross weight. (2008 Data) Iwato Yama derives from the Japanese myth of Amano-Iwato. Iwato Yama enshrines Amaterasu, who is considered the ancestor of the emperor.   • location: Aya Gasahoko is located on Ayanokoji-dori, about 90 meters west of the intersection of Muromachi-dori (north-south) and Ayanokoji-dori (east-west).
  • Aya Gasahoko is marked by an umbrella about 2.6 meters in diameter. Aya Gasahoko weighs about 0.36 tons. (2008 Data) Aya Gasahoko is an old-style float, along with Shijo Kasahoko. Gion Matsuri music is played and stick-flying dances is performed.

It is a blessing for matchmaking. The figure of Hirai Yasumasa wears armor and holds a stand heaped with red plum blossoms.
